Falcon State Park, operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife, is a tranquil state park situated in Falcon Heights, Texas. Known for its well-maintained facilities and serene ambiance, this park offers a pleasant retreat for nature enthusiasts. Although primarily tailored to boaters and fishermen due to its picturesque lake, hikers can also enjoy the park's offerings. Visitors can explore the park's loop trail, which provides a peaceful walk surrounded by scenic beauty, occasional encounters with Javelina, and a variety of bird species. Stayed here a week. The facilities were nice and clean and the park itself was very nicely kept and very quiet. The shower/bathroom was clean and had good water pressure.
I'm more into hiking and this park being on a lake is obviously geared towards boaters and fisherman, but I still enjoyed my stay here. (Might be a 5 star for those folks.)There is a loop trail around the park that's pleasant to walk, just carry a stick in front of you so you don't keep catching webs in your face. Javelina roam the park throughout the day, and there's a nice variety of birds to see. The sunsets have been spectacular!
The lake is still way down even with all the rain this spring, and will probably take years to recover, but I'm told it's much better than it was just a year ago.
The closest town is Roma, about 20-25 minutes away where you can get anything you might have forgotten or need, plus has all the standard fast food restaurants and a fairly well stocked grocery store for as small as the town is.
All and all it was a nice stay. I don't know if I would make a trip expressly to come back, but if you're passing through it's a nice off the beaten path place to camp.
EDIT: Bumping my review to 5 stars. My biggest complaint about the trails is that none of them followed the lake. It was always off in the distance, probably because it is so low. My last day I visited the day use area. Because the drought has gone on so long, there are well-worn trails leading down to the shore line beyond the picnic concourses which have paths through trees and grasses full of wildlife and great views of the lake. You might not see much of the lake on the designated trails, but I really enjoyed this overgrown shore area. Really wish I had explored more earlier.
Falcon is a great place for rv camping, birding, and though the lake is low...people seem to be fishing. The roads are free of pot-holes and pavement damage that many campgrounds are riddled with. The hookups are clean and in good repair, sites level. Trails for hiking are not extensive, a 2-3 mile loop with a few side trails. You can cover them in a few hours, but the bird feeding stations, blinds, butterfly garden make each hike quite different in the wildlife you might see. Great area for older kids/teens who might enjoy exploring something bigger than a playground, but not such a big place they could get truly lost.
Restrooms were clean with hot water, leashed-dog friendly. The picnic areas for day use are very nice, many have water. It is obvious they are not right on the lake anymore due to falling water levels, but still very scenic. There is not a playground to my knowledge, but the rec center has a library of sorts with books to loan and reference materials on the local flora and fauna. I believe they have coffee and pastries on occasion.
Park personnel are friendly and informative. All my time at Texas state parks has been great.
Falcon State Park just minutes from Mexico. On Falcon Lake, next to Falcon Dam. Great fishing, trails, and sight seeing. Equipped with the means to stay overnight in a tent or RV or maybe just a day pass for family fun.
We made a last minute decision to go camping during spring break, we were thankful Falcon State Park had an opening. We had a great time here. We spent a nice time down at the water enjoying the weather and sun. The restrooms and showers were also clean. Thanks for an enjoyable place to come camp.
The sunrises and sunsets were great as well being able to see the stars and wildlife. I just wish I had pictures of the 5 javelins we saw running through the bushes.
This is an awesome spot for camping. Would have given it 5 stars if we water. It went out during the nasty cold spell but the workers are great. They worked non stop to fix it and did bring water around to fill your holding tanks.
The park is exceptionally clean and very well maintained.
Would definitely stay here again
Fun and lots to do, fishing, hiking, camping and swimming. There aren't stores near by so make sure to have packed what you need to avoid leaving constantly. Some campers have a/c some don't make sure to make a reservation ahead of time to get a good one. There aren't things close by but duh it's a state park it's what to expect. Don't be upset of the stores are a drive away either, its literally a state park. Nice views, pretty scenery, very hot during the summer but great time spent
Coming into Falcon State Park at 3:00PM in 106 degree weather makes you not want to do anything but relax indoors. I lounged in my tent until about 6 to do the hike the goes around the whole park. It was much cooler at that time. The park itself wasn’t very busy and I didn’t see anyone on the hike. There is a burn ban currently which was good to know beforehand so I had other food available. The grass would have quickly caught fire because it’s so dry.
Fourth time trek to this hidden gem of South Texas, and is still a beautiful place to visit. Entrance fee is $3.00 per person for a day visit. Park staff attentive and friendly, and full services available. plenty of space to camp, rv, fish, swim, launch a boat or park and relax. Open fires allowed in designated areas and plenty bank fishing around the boat ramp (unfortunately the ramp is closed due to extreme low water levels). A must visit place (before all of the water is dried up from this fresh water lake). Every time I visited the camp is not crowded; however, bring plenty of water as temperatures are extreme even in the fall and winter.
